What Is A Christian Writer?
Are you really one? This is a question that only you can answer as you search your heart. In this school you will not be studying courses on writing, but will be evaluating your commitment to Christ, and discovering who you are as a Christian writer in the body of Christ, and how you want to affect the world for him through your writings.
A quote from Martin Luther : “The Christian shoemaker does his duty not by putting little crosses on shoes, but by making good shoes, because God is interested in good craftsmanship.” It's the same with writing for God, he wants the world to see how skilled you are in revealing him through your written words as you write about the everyday struggles all people, Christian and non-Christians share in life and how through faith and God's guidance they can overcome them . It is not the school's purpose to make any Christian author feel guilty about their writings, or their walk with the Lord, but only to help them search their hearts, for out of it flows the issues of life, and how you show your faith and reveal God to others is telling the Gospel story to the world through your words!
A Thought To Remember
God should always be the author behind all your writings, and you should always be the pen he chooses to use!
Is God Real To Your Readers?
First question all believers must ask themselves....is God real to
me? Readers can tell by how you put words together if you personally know who you are writing about,or if you got your information from someone else, like family, friends, or other writings etc... It's hard to write about someone you have no personal relationship with, your writings will be a bit cold and impersonal.
You can be saved and on your way to Heaven and yet don't know much about God because you don't spend time with him in his word, so he can speak to you and reveal more about himself to you. It's like your family, you know all about them, their likes, dislikes, habits how they will react in certain situations, when they are happy, or sad, what they like to do for fun. You could probably write a book about them, and nail it, because you know them intimately It should be the same with God. Likewise, you should know him equally like that and have no problem describing him to others in person, or on paper.
So first discover how your relationship is with God, If it's not as close as you want it to be, then take the time to get close to him, and you will be amazed at how wonderful he is, and then you can share that from your own personal relationship while discovering what a wonderful helper he is to your writings!
What makes a Christian Novel?
This statement says it well.
"A Christian novel is a story in which one or more of the characters solve his/her problems or strive for a goal from a Christian Worldview. God is a priority: His plan and His purpose for the character."
What the difference between Christian & Secular fiction?
One possesses a healthy awareness of original sin (Christian). The other does not believe in sin at all (Secular). Christianity believes human behavior starts with the heart. The secularist says human behavior is determined by external forces like education or income.
As a Christian Should I read secular books?
This article might help you to answer this question
Instead of asking, "Should I read secular fiction?" what we really should do is ask a series of questions about each individual book that we are considering. Questions like:
Will this novel be helpful and edifying for me?
Will anything good come from reading this?
Will reading this compromise my beliefs or tempt me to go against my convictions?
Am I trying to find a biblical loophole to justify what my flesh wants, or is this really okay for me individually?
As Christians, we have the freedom to read books that are available to us. But we should keep in mind what Corinthians 10:23 says: "All things are lawful, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful, but not all things edify."
"The Bible might not give an overall ultimatum on our media intake choices, but it does give principles to follow to help us make the best choices as to what would be and would not be good for us."
Philippians 4:8 says, "Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things."
Not all secular books are bad, but these things must be considered on your journey as a Christian writer. Who are you trying to please, God, the world, or yourself ?
